WHY HOLISTIC NUTRITION?

Before I dive into why I choose and believe in looking at nutrition holistically I want to say that I respect all other professions in the health and wellness industry. I think each has its rightful place and part to play. Being and becoming a human being is phenomenal and complex so the tools used to protect and heal this complex being should follow suite right?

If you simply break down each one of us, we have 3 main components: mind, body and soul. All three of these aspects work together synergistically. If one is off, then this blocks the flow of the circle and in effect you have a negative domino effect, even if one of the three may not have been affected before, it now is.

Conventional medicine, dietetics, nutritionist may only be looking at a symptom and curing that specific issue , but as holistic nutritionists we want to find out what the root problem is to get this circle in full energetic flow again. This may mean looking at your lifestyle and determining what factors in your environment may be causing certain symptoms, what natural foods and supplements you may be lacking in your diet that is causing the blockage in your system, looking at your sleep pattern to see what times you are waking up as each timing is linked to an organ and emotion. Your Doctor may have diagnosed you with insulin resistance, but when we look at you as a whole we may find that the root cause isn’t actually your insulin, it may be connected to another factor in your body and insulin resistance is just one of the by-products of this. Once we fix the root cause you may find that the many other issues that you thought you may have had will fix itself in the process as the root of the tree is being healed, therefore the branches too will receive such healing.

The reason why I love holistic nutrition is that we look at YOU, how YOUR mind, body and soul function, how YOUR body reacts to certain foods, what your BODY may be lacking or needing. YOU are not the same as the as ANY other human, so how can we treat you in a generalised way.

Natural foods is our main focus, but we know that this is just one aspect of helping you holistically. The pots and pans you are using, the containers that you store your food in, the household and skincare products you use, the oils you are cooking with, the herbs and spices and wonderful teas that you may be omitting for your diet, the places you are sourcing your food and supplements from, all these play a vital role in keeping the circle flowing in harmony. What is the point of getting fresh organic food just to cook it in a Teflon pan where all those harmful toxins are going to seep in and contaminate that food? Why cook delicious and nutritious food just to store it in plastic where there is a potential of harmful substances being absorbed? Why use conventional deodorants with harmful ingredients when the under arm pit are one of our biggest areas close to our lymph nodes? So as you can see, food is the major component but not the only one that plays a vital role. We want the foods to be energy giving and not energy draining. We want to fuel your body so you don’t “react” but “respond”, we want you to have energy after a long day of work to be able to take your kids to the playground and run around with them, we want you to have patience with your loved ones after a stressful day, we want to build your immunity system up that it’s so strong that and bacteria would find it hard to enter your system, we want to build your body in such a way that it all runs like a perfect tick of a clock.  You only have this one beautiful life, why not live it with absolute vibrancy and love for yourself. Once your tank is full of this energy, you will start to see how much more you can give to all aspects of your life. You are either building an environment for disease or you are building an environment for vital health.

Cleaning products:

YAY!

  • Fragrance free (or natural oils used for scent) and organic ingredients. We love the brand ‘ECOVER.
  • There are many DIY home recipes that are cost effective and easy to do at home.

Below is one of our favourite ones to make:

Multi-purpose cleaner:

Fill up a mason jar with lemon/orange/grapefruit peels and fill the jar up with vinegar and 4-6 drops of lemon essential oil (optional). Close the lid tightly and let it soak for 3 weeks. The longer you leave it the more potent it will be. Once the weeks are completed, strain the mixture and mix equal parts of the citrus solution and water in a spray bottle.

 NAY:

  • Phthalates (majority of household cleaning products)
  • Triclosan ( found in most dishwashing liquids)
  • Quarternary Ammonium Compounds (found in fabric softeners and products labelled “anti-bacterial”)
  • Butoxyethanol (found in most multi-purpose, window and kitchen cleaners)
  • Chlorine (found in most bathroom products)
  • Sodium hydroxide (found in most oven cleaners and drain openers)

Deodorants:

YAY!

Anything made from natural substances. With the upcoming concern on the chemicals being added to self-care products, many companies have now started doing natural products. The brands that we use are Routine and various ones from Laverna.

Want to make you own?

-½ cup baking soda (you can start with less if you find it irritates your skin)

- ½ cup arrowroot/ corn-starch

- 5 tbs unrefined coconut oil

- 20 drops of antibacterial essential oil like grapefruit/lemon/ peppermint/ eucalyptus/ tea tree/ lemongrass

Mix all the ingredients together and store in a clean airtight container (it can last for 3-6 months). Use a wooden stick to directly apply it or you can just use you clean fingers. Remember that coconut oil will harden in cold conditions and melt in warm conditions, so keep it a place in the house where the temperature is pretty steady.
